Tra i concorsi fotografici ilTravel Photographer of the Year,dedicato alla fotografia di viaggio, aperto a fotografi professionisti e dilettanti di ogni età, è ormai un appuntamento molto ambito con un prestigioso panel di giudici – importanti fotografi ed esperti del settore – chiamati ogni anno a valutare bellezza, tecnica e originalità di migliaia di scatti provenienti da ogni angolo del pianeta.
Il premio è stato fondato nel 2003 dal fotografo professionista Chris Coe e dalla sua compagna Karen Coes, pr e consulente di marketing: “Volevamo dimostrare” raccontano “che la fotografia di viaggio è molto di più di scatti delle vacanze e belle cartoline”.
L’ultima edizione ha visto concorrere fotografi professionisti e dilettanti di 142 paesi con oltre 20.000 immagini, scattate con ogni mezzo dalle fotocamere professionali di fascia alta ai cellulari passando per i tablet.
L’immagine di copertina, scatto di Marsel Van Oosten, dei Paesi Bassi, ci porta in Cina alle pendici dei monti Qinling dove vivono, nascoste nella foresta, le scimmie dorate dal naso camuso, i primati più antichi al mondo e specie minacciata di cui esistono ormai poco più di 3800 individui.
“Per catturare questa immagine” racconta l’americano Edward Graham ricordando il suo scatto nel lago di Baikal, in Siberia “mi sono disteso sulla superficie, allineando la mia macchina fotografica al blocco di ghiaccio e mirando al sole che tramontava in lontananza. Il blocco di ghiaccio si illuminò di riflessi dorati, emettendo un calore visivo che smentiva il freddo di questo posto meraviglioso”.
Una gru rossa di Kaohsiung, grande città portuale nel sud di Taiwan, scatto di Yingting Shih di Taiwan, che nel pulire il piumaggio assume le sembianze del taijitu, simbolo della cultura cinese, in particolare, della religione taoista e della filosofia confuciana e rappresentazione dello yin (nero) e dello yang (bianco) con l’unione dei due principi in opposizione.
I colori sgargianti di un camaleonte del Mantadia National Park, in Madagascar, non sono sfuggiti all’obiettivo del fotografo spagnolo Ignacio Palacios.
Eilat, estremo sud di Israele, una murena del Mar Rosso, scatto dell’israeliano Tom Schlesinger, trova un rifugio notturno nel guscio di quella che era una vongola gigante.
Un martin pescatore, scatto del croato Petar Sabol a Palovec nella municipalità di Mala Subotica, in Croazia, afferra un pesce sott’acqua: “Ci sono volute settimane e migliaia di tentativi per ottenere questa immagine”.

I fotografi di viaggio devono essere multiesperti, capaci di realizzare vari tipi di immagini e lavorare con tutte le luci”.
Il premio, un tempo gestito da casa, ha oggi il suo quartier generale in un ufficio nella campagna del Suffolk, in Inghilterra. Tra i suoi sponsor c’è la Royal Photographic Society. L’ultima edizione ha visto concorrere fotografi professionisti e dilettanti di 142 paesi con oltre 20.000 immagini, scattate con ogni mezzo dalle fotocamere professionali di fascia alta ai cellulari passando per i tablet. Vincitore assoluto l’italiano Stefano Pensotti, fotografo semi-professionista, per il suo reportage di viaggio attraverso Mali, Georgia, Etiopia, Myanmar, Senegal, India e Ungheria.
Fra Londra e gli Emirati Arabi
Le immagini vincitrici del concorso, oltre 10 le categorie, verranno esposte in primavera in una mostra all’aperto a London Bridge City di fronte alla Torre di Londra e vicino al London Bridge – simbolo della capitale britannica – quindi in occasione di alcuni eventi internazionali, tra cui Exposure, il festival di fotografia di Sharjah, negli Emirati Arabi, e principale festival fotografico del Medio Oriente.
