Si intitola “I am Ruth” ed è la storia di una madre e di una figlia adolescente dipendente dai social network e dei tentativi della donna di comprendere e aiutare la figlia ad uscire da una crisi di salute mentale. Questo nuovo dramma segna la continuazione della serie antologica “I Am” dell'emittente britannica Channel 4 e ha permesso a Kate Winslet di vincere un Bafta per la sua interpretazione.
Il discorso di Kate Winslet
Durante il suo discorso, l'attrice ha voluto sensibilizzare sul tema della dipendenza da internet e sulla necessità di vietare i contenuti potenzialmente nocivi per la salute mentale e fisica dei più giovani:
“I social network possono diventare un luogo molto pericoloso e non dobbiamo vergognarci di chiedere aiuto se pensiamo che il nostro rapporto con il web stia influendo negativamente sulla nostra salute e sulla nostra vita”.
Un tema molto attuale che potrebbe offrire uno sguardo utile e formativo alle giovani generazioni, ma anche ai genitori che si trovano a combattere contro lo stesso problema.
I social
Ormai i social media sono una parte integrante della vita delle persone ed hanno cambiato il modo in cui gli individui interagiscono tra loro, permettendo di condividere le proprie opinioni e i propri pensieri con gli altri in modo rapido, semplice e a distanza.
Così ad una prima analisi dovrebbe essere un cambiamento positivo; tuttavia, i social media hanno suscitato sin dall'inizio preoccupazioni per la salute mentale dei loro utenti, prima di tutto dei giovani.
L'impatto del digitale sugli studenti
Nel documento approvato dalla 7ª commissione permanente del Senato nella seduta del 9 giugno 2021 “Sull'impatto del digitale sugli studenti, con particolare riferimento ai processi di apprendimento”, “i risultati dell'indagine mettono in evidenza danni fisici (miopia, obesità, ipertensione, disturbi muscolo-scheletrici, diabete) e psicologici (dipendenza, alienazione, depressione, irascibilità, aggressività, insonnia, insoddisfazione, diminuzione dell'empatia) nei giovani. Il cervello agisce come un muscolo, si sviluppa in base all'uso che se ne fa e l'uso di dispositivi digitali (smartphone e videogiochi), così come la scrittura su tastiera elettronica invece della scrittura a mano, non sollecita il cervello. Il muscolo, dunque, si atrofizza, con una progressiva perdita di facoltà mentali essenziali, le facoltà che per millenni hanno rappresentato quella che sommariamente chiamiamo intelligenza: la capacità di concentrazione, la memoria, lo spirito critico, l'adattabilità, la capacità dialettica. Sono gli effetti che l'uso, che nella maggior parte dei casi non può che degenerare in abuso, di smartphone e videogiochi produce sui più giovani”.
Smartphone e adolescenti
La diffusione degli smartphone ha cambiato radicalmente ogni aspetto della vita di un adolescente, dalla natura delle interazioni sociali, fino alla salute mentale. I tassi di depressione e suicidi tra i teenager sono in aumento dal 2011. Non è una esagerazione descrivere questa generazione come quella sull'orlo della peggiore crisi di salute mentale da decenni a questa parte (Twenge, 2018).
Twenge (2017) ha condotto uno studio su oltre 5.000 ragazzi degli Stati Uniti e ha evidenziato che, a causa dell'uso di smartphone e videogiochi, gli adolescenti trascorrono molto meno tempo con i loro amici, sempre meno ragazzi hanno la patente di guida. Fanno meno incontri romantici, fanno meno sesso, hanno meno sonno e hanno maggiori probabilità di sentirsi soli. Gli adolescenti trascorrono almeno tre ore al giorno sui dispositivi elettronici e questo ha portato al 35% in più di probabilità di rischi relativi ai suicidi. I sintomi depressivi nei ragazzi sono aumentati del 21% dal 2012 al 2015, mentre nelle ragazze la percentuale arriva al 50%. I giovani vanno meno alle feste e si incontrano per poco tempo con gli amici, ma quando si riuniscono, documentano compulsivamente tutto sui social network, spesso senza godersi realmente il momento. Per questo, gli amici che vedono le foto su Facebook, e magari non sono stati invitati alla festa, si sentono esclusi e soli.
I comportamenti compulsivi legati all'uso dei social media
Alcuni esempi di comportamenti compulsivi legati all'uso dei social media possono essere:
- controllare costantemente il proprio telefono per vedere se ci sono nuovi messaggi oppure notifiche;
- trascorrere molto tempo sui social media;
- controllare costantemente il proprio profilo per vedere se ci sono stati dei cambiamenti;
- leggere e rileggere i messaggi ricevuti;
- inviare messaggi o postare aggiornamenti anche se non si ha nulla di nuovo da dire;
- confrontare il proprio profilo con quello degli altri;
- diventare irritabili o ansiosi se si è lontani dai social media per un periodo di tempo;
- mentire sull'utilizzo che si fa dei social media.
Come possono affrontare i genitori questo problema dilagante?
Di seguito quattro consigli utili per le famiglie:
- attenzione al tempo di uso dello smartphone: esistono numerose funzionalità e app che permettono di tenere traccia delle ore passate davanti allo schermo, è possibile anche impostare notifiche o blocchi quando si supera un determinato numero di ore;
- stabilire delle “no-smartphone-zones”: creare delle vere e proprie zone della casa dove il telefono “non può entrare” può dare un aiuto significativo nel limitarne l'uso. E vietare di tenere il telefono sul tavolo durante i pasti,
- tenere lontano il telefono quando si è alla guida,
- disattivare le notifiche: questo è un modo semplice ed efficace per frenare il circolo vizioso che spinge a controllare il cellulare in continuazione (Di Cristofaro, 5 dicembre 2020).
Ed infine un ultimo consiglio per tutti: incentivare e dare priorità alle interazioni di persona ritagliandosi deliberatamente del tempo da trascorrere con amici e familiari, “dimenticandosi” per qualche ora il cellulare nella giacca o in borsa.
